The Organising Committee for the 4th International Abalone Symposium is pleased to confirm that the symposium will take place in the Education Building, Middle Campus, University of Cape Town from 6th to 11th February, 2000. Please complete the enclosed Registration Form, which contains separate sections for Registration, Workshops, Social Functions and University Accommodation. A separate form must be filled in to book hotel accommodation.
All the forms you require can be found on this website by clicking here
Registration
Registration will be confirmed only after the registration fee has been received. To qualify for the standard registration fee, payment must be received before 30 November 1999. After this an extra fee of R300 will apply. Payment must be in South African Rands without charges to the beneficiary (i.e. any bank charges or commission must be added to the fee and paid by the delegate). For methods of payment see Section 7 of Registration Form. If you intend to bring a companion, please indicate this on the registration form and complete Section 4 if you wish to purchase tickets for social functions for your companion. Please total all fees due and indicate these in Section 6. Please note that for credit card payment, you must complete and sign Block 2 of Section 7 and return THE ORIGINAL form, with your signature to the symposium address.
Submission of Abstracts and Papers for Proceedings
Delegates intending to present either a paper or a poster must submit an Abstract of not more than 350 words that must be received by the organisers not later than 31st August 1999. To allow time for preparation of the Book of Abstracts, no Abstracts will be accepted after this date. For preparation of Abstracts, please refer to the attached example. Papers presented at the symposium will be published in a peer-reviewed Conference Proceedings. If you wish your paper to be considered for publication in this volume, you must submit the manuscript to the symposium desk not later than 7th February 2000. The manuscript must also be submitted on disk, preferably written in WORD 97.
Workshops
A number of workshops will be run during the symposium and entrance to these will be free for registered delegates. In addition, 2 specialist training workshops will be run, with the possibility of more being arranged (see Section 3). Because these will be hands-on workshops, they will require laboratory facilities and will be run either in the Zoology Department at U.C.T. or at the aquarium facility of the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. An additional fee of R150 will be charged to help cover the costs of the specialist workshops. As space will be limited, places for the workshops will be allocated only upon receipt of the full registration fee and workshop fee.
Social Functions
Costs of social functions will be included in the registration fee for delegates but additional tickets for social functions must be purchased for companions (see Section 4). As there will be social functions on all evenings except Wednesday, delegates are advised to book accommodation on a Bed and Breakfast basis only.
Accommodation
Two types of accommodation will be available. The least expensive accommodation will be available in Smuts Hall, a university residence. Most accommodation will be in single rooms but delegates attending with companions may request double rooms. The charge for a double room will be twice that for a single room. Smuts Hall has a central lounge and television room but no individual television sets in bedrooms. The residence is within very easy walking distance of the symposium venue and we encourage delegates to use this residence.
For those who do not wish to use the university residence, a number of local hotels are available, but we should like to encourage delegates who do not wish to use the university accommodation to use the Holiday Inn Garden Court. Please note that none of the hotels are within easy walking distance of the university. Delegates using hotels must make their own arrangements to get to and from the symposium venue and we advise such delegates to hire cars for this purpose. If sufficient delegates book into the Holiday Inn Garden Court, we will attempt to arrange a daily taxi service to and from that hotel. We have appointed a travel agent (EXCAPE Adventure Tours) to handle all hotel bookings. IF YOU WISH TO BOOK A HOTEL, PLEASE DO NOT USE SECTION 5 OF THE REGISTRATION FORM FOR THIS. A SEPARATE HOTEL BOOKING FORM IS ENCLOSED AND THIS MUST BE RETURNED DIRECTLY TO THE TRAVEL AGENT. THE TRAVEL AGENT FORM MUST ALSO BE USED TO BOOK PRE- AND POST-CONFERENCE TOURS, CAR HIRE AND AIRPORT TRANSFERS. PAYMENTS FOR THESE MUST BE MADE DIRECTLY TO THE TRAVEL AGENT AND NOT INCLUDED WITH PAYMENTS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN.
Cape Town International airport is about 15 minutes drive from the symposium venue. If you need transport from the airport and do not intend to hire a car, we advise you to use the airport transfer available from our travel agent. Please book on the travel agent booking form. Taxis are available at the airport but the fare will be considerably higher than the per-booked airport transfer. The University is in Rondebosch and the Holiday Inn nearby in Newlands. Both are about 10 Km away from the centre of Cape Town so DO NOT use airport transport to the centre of Cape Town unless you chose to stay at a city centre hotel.
Pre- and Post-Conference Tours and Technical Tours
Pre- and Post-Conference tours are listed in a separate brochure. Please note that no dates are specified for these tours. Delegates may state their preference for dates and individual tours will be confirmed once sufficient delegates have booked for any specific date. Technical tours to local aquaculture facilities will be organised. Dates and costs of such tours will be advised later.
Members of the Organising Committee look forward to welcoming you to Cape Town.
